Historical Icon Series Art Opening April 7, 2011

New work!

I've been invited to show new work from my Icon Series: LoDo.   The show at Translations Gallery in Denver's popular and historical LoDo neighborhood is opening April 7, 2011.
Reception 5:30-8:00 pm.

"Photography: Capturing Space, Texture and Time" presents a group show of work by Alex Benison, Izah Gallagher, Cecella Feld, Bryan David Griffith and myself.    The show will open through May 14, 2011.
I have an extensive list of prominent museum and gallery shows from the Nelson-Atkins in Kansas City to the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe. Although I consider my work contemporary and conceptual, I still care seriously about form.   In this new series I capture the details of our built environment. The events of 2010 are manifested in the final images.

Elizabeth Taylor, a life of romance in Mexico

How did Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor meet at any hour for a romantic interlude during their time together in Puerto Vallarta? "When the filming of The Night of the Iguana ended, Burton and Taylor bought villas across the street from one another, linked by an arched pink love bridge."** In Spanish it is known as, 'puente de reconciliacion'.

During the filming of the movie, the stars lived in this part of the village. As the story goes, she had no role in the film, but followed Richard Burton to Puerto Vallarta "to save her lover from the temptations of his three co-stars- Ava Gardner, Deborah Kerr and Sue Lyon." They obtained Mexican divorces from their spouses and wed each other in Puerto Vallarta. Elizabeth lived part-time in her house for 26 years.

They put this seaside village on the map and my husband and I have been making regular visits there for over 25 years. It is still inspiration for romance, passion and creative energy.

He was loved for 13-1/2 years before he moved on.

Looking UP

Ramon was a short, but long animal. As a spirited little dog, looking up was part of his attitude too. He loved ladies, kissed up to them and watched for the tall girls in short skirts.

Ramon was adorable. He didn't mind getting soaked because he'd put his head out the window in the rain as we drove down from a hike in the mountains.

To Ramon this was joy.

Be My Valentine

Ramon had personality and made lots of friends on this planet. We always said he was from Venus.


Eye Contact Most dog lovers know how amazing their pets can be. Ramon was so distinctive when he trotted down the street that he became an icon in our neighborhood, LoDo. People didn't even see us on the other end of the leash.

He understood everything. He didn't need eye contact with us to communicate.

Ramon was really fast and loved chasing balls indoors especially with his nephew, Jeff.

With treats after every 'pop' he was a willing and perfect model for this task. The following shot appeared in Popular Photography magazine among others. This film image was used to illustrate the creative features of the Pentax 645 medium format camera which I used under contract with Pentax.

Farewell to THE Wire-Haired Dachshund, Ramon

Ramon, our best friend, lived to be 13-1/2 years of age. He had a pretty darn good time!
He loved being photographed because the event always involved lots of yummy cookies for him.

We did a series of motion images because Ramon also liked Muybridge.

How I built my business in photography.

How are you building your business?

I built mine by referrals and my passion for sports and ski photography. Shooting ski action took me around the world, so much fun and great people. I managed to get lost on several continents.
An editor for Newsweek said, "If you can shoot skiing, you can shoot anything!"

For the next few days I will post some of my favorite images.

Before the Women's Freestyle Moguls in Lillehammer, Norway, I made my way to the top of the course to find this spot. Snow from the bumps just skied follows the racer for a great graphic texture.
This was done for Ski Magazine.

Today snowflakes are huge and Ramon, my dog, has received a red coat from a friend. It's a beautiful time to create an image. I built my business doing ski photography and love times when light, the snow, the action and the place all come together!

This shadowy character is Adam Lerner as captured

with my iphone during the B+ explanations of

contemporary art at the MCA Denver. As he and Steven

Wolf of San Francisco waxed pretty poetic about

contemporary art now, the shadows on the walls behind

them created beautiful shapes. As a photographer it is

my job to capture and create. This image got

jazzier with a little bit of the app Photo fx.
